The ins and outs of net curtains

Most of us have come across net curtains before. A net curtain is one that is made from translucent fabric. They can be used to soften a window or to give a serene atmosphere as they allow light to be through the fabric. Also referred to as sheer curtains, their loose weave offers protection from sunlight while keeping visibility through the curtain. Sheer curtains are sometimes referred to as privacy curtains as they usually will allow those inside a house to see outside while stopping anyone outside from being able to see inside. In other words, you can spy on your neighbours without fear of them seeing you!

Net Curtains and Lace can be used in any room at home or in an office, and can be used to compliment normal curtains. You may wish to choose simplistic designs to complement a contemporary minimalist space, or more lavish and stylish alternatives can add character to an otherwise plain room.

What is the net curtain for me?

Net curtains come in various materials and designs. Perhaps the most popular choice is Voile – a French word if you haven't already guessed. It is a lightweight woven fabric, usually made of 100% cotton or cotton blends with linen or polyester. Lace is also an option. A classic heavy Jacquard or Nottingham lace style cotton fabric can bring a traditional and elegant feel to any room.

It is important to choose between lightweight and ‘heavy' net curtain designs. The former gives a subtle elegance whereas the latter can really add to the personality of a home. A multitude of patterns including flowers, plants and even just simple shapes is available. Some styles even have sequins to add some character.

How do I make sure my net curtains are the right size?

Obviously, the only way to ensure your net curtains are the right dimensions is to measure the windows they will be adorning. It is straightforward enough doing this – just measure the width of the window, the height of the window itself and the height from the top of the window to the floor. The only thing you need to remember is to make sure you measure the recess width and height. For those of us who are not engineers or do it yourself experts, this is the space between the inner edges of the window frame rather than the outer edges.
